Dental Implant Placement & Restoration
One of the most amazing advancements in modern dentistry has been the dental implant. Thanks to extensive scientific study and research, dental implants have been developed to provide patients with a drastically improved form of tooth replacement. Dr. Mark Landau is known for performing complex reconstructions with dental implants at our Skokie dental office in Chicago's North Shore community, both surgically placing the implant posts and providing beautiful restorations created at exclusive boutique dental labs.
Tooth Replacement Options
For patients who have lost teeth, finding a reliable, comfortable, and beautiful form of tooth replacement is paramount. It is essential for ongoing oral and overall health that missing teeth be replaced. For hundreds of years, the main form of tooth replacement has been dentures. Dentures are not necessarily ideal for tooth replacement because they’re not anchored in the mouth, which means that they can slip and cause discomfort. They also don’t do anything to stimulate healthy jawbone. When you lose a tooth or teeth, your jawbone begins to shrink. Fixed bridges anchored by crowns offered a more stable form of tooth replacement, but these still didn’t support healthy jawbone. Jawbone needs tooth roots to stay healthy. Because dentists wanted to find a form of tooth replacement that can counteract these problems, researchers worked to develop dental implants.
Dental Implant Process
Dental implants actually replace the tooth roots as well as the crowns of the teeth. Titanium screws are surgically implanted in the jawbone, and the bone will fuse with the screws (a process known as osseointegration). Titanium is used because it is biocompatible (works well with biological structures like your jawbone and gum), strong, and lightweight. It is the osseointegration that makes dental implants such a successful treatment for missing teeth.
Once your dental implants have been surgically placed by Dr. Landau, your jaw and gums will be allowed to heal, giving the titanium implants time to fuse. Then, dental crowns or bridges will be attached to the dental implants.
Dr. Landau lectures on dental implants, showing his vast knowledge on the subject of reconstructing smiles with this modern tooth replacement technique.
Dental implants are recommended for tooth replacement because they provide improved strength, don’t allow for slipping, support bone health, and function very much like natural teeth. They offer an esthetically pleasing result as well.
