Porcelain Crowns, Inlays, & Onlays
Reconstructive Dentistry Offering Porcelain Restorations
Teeth can experience various levels of damage. For a small cavity, the restorative dental treatment would most likely be a composite resin tooth-colored filling. If the damage is a bit more extensive, though, you will need a porcelain crown, inlay, or onlay instead. Because Dr. Mark Landau focuses on performing complex reconstructive dentistry with an eye toward creating beautiful results, our Skokie dental office in Chicago's North Shore area, offers porcelain crowns, inlays, and onlays as part of our treatment planning options.
Dental Inlays & Onlays
If damage isn't extensive enough to require a full porcelain crown, we may place an inlay or onlay.
- Dental Inlay: A dental restoration that covers the area within the cusps of the tooth.
- Dental Onlay: A dental restoration that extends to the area outside of the cusps of the tooth.
The cusp of a tooth is the "pointed part" of the molar or bicuspid. Inlays are very similar to fillings, but they offer a bit more durability and strength. For a cavity that covers a greater area, an onlay can provide relief.
For those who've experienced more extensive damage, inlays and onlays won't provide enough coverage. In these cases, a dental crown will be used to completely cover the tooth, reinforcing the structure for improved strength, function, and esthetics. When made from porcelain, dental crowns look like natural teeth, offering those with damaged teeth a cosmetic option for treatment.
Benefits of Porcelain Crowns
Porcelain crowns can be used to cap teeth that have been fractured, broken, treated with a root canal, or damaged by extensive decay that has covered more than 50% of the surface of the tooth. They can also be used to anchor a fixed bridge in place or top off a dental implant to complete the smile restoration. Shaped like a natural tooth, porcelain crowns go over your own tooth once it’s been prepared, transforming a damaged, decayed, or diseased tooth into a whole and complete tooth.
Dr. Landau relies on exclusive boutique dental labs known for creating high quality dental restorations for the creation of your porcelain crowns, inlays, or onlays.
